A day in the life of a flight nurse can not be summarised easily; every new day brings a new patient and a new experience, different from the day before. Patients being transferred can vary from a middle aged woman recovering post MI to a young child falling over and hurting themselves to the premature infant returning to their hometown following stabilisation after birth.
At the Bunderberg base, our "office" is the south east corner of Queensland. In the space of a working day, it is not unusual to move from Hervey Bay to Eidsvold to Gayndah to Maryborough and often all before lunch.
The challenges can also be varied from the difficulties related to delivering patient care within space limitations to adequately managing time to ensure all destinations are reached as quickly as possible.
Routine is reserved for other areas of nursing, certainly not the RFDS.
