Visit Flying Doctor, Alice Springs Visitor’s Centre on line shop (see ‘Our Divisions’ Central Operations)
One of Australia's most legendary organisations, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, is on show at the RFDS Alice Springs Visitors' Centre.
The Visitors' Centre at Alice Springs commenced operations in the late 1970s and since then has grown to become one of the most popular attractions in Central Australia.
The television series based on the RFDS has made the Base a 'must see' attraction on all travellers itineraries.
Last year over 100,000 people visited the Centre which was recently redeveloped and extended including the addition of a Cafe and Bush Kitchen.
In a recent tourism visitation survey, the Centre also maintained its status as Alice Springs pre-eminent attraction with many repeat visitors coming to see the expanded range of displays.
Let us take you on a tour of the Base .....
The tour has been designed around five elements:
- Informative Video
- Radio Communications Centre
- Museum
- Cafe & Bush Kitchen
- Souvenir Shop
The tour begins ...
A member of our friendly and knowledgeable team, who will remain with you throughout the tour, welcomes you to the Base.
Tours commence on the hour and half-hour and take approximately 3/4 of an hour.
Video
An inspiring 10 minute video is shown of RFDS staff talking about their work along with people who have been helped by the Service. There is some excellent footage of the vast Australian Outback areas we cover along with a good insight into the vital work of the Flying Doctor.
A German speaking video is also available for group bookings. This must be booked in advance and is then screened at 1/4 to or 1/4 past the hour. In this instance, your tour guide is asked to give the talk and our staff are available to answer questions at the Radio Communications Centre.
Radio Communications Centre
After the video, you are guided into the Radio communications viewing area where our staff talk about the history of the Flying Doctor and explain the present day to day operations. This is also an ideal time for you to ask any questions about the Service.
Museum
You then move on into our Museum where you can browse at your leisure viewing old medical equipment, an original Traeger Pedal Radio, model aircraft and more.
